A propos de cet article

First editions of both parts of this English-Hebrew dictionary and grammar, intended to make accessible the language of the Old Testament to every Christian; the first title is the secondary issue of the 1653 A Gate or Door to the Holy Tongue with cancel title page and three additional preliminary leaves, and additionally carries the additional bifolioum bearing a dedication to the author's "respected friend" (another reissue). "A pedagogical revolutionary with an egalitarian message and a passionate and parenthetical style, Robertson believed that Hebrew was not an esoteric language and that almost any man, given plain and careful instruction, could learn Hebrew even without the aid of a teacher so that he might perceive 'truth in its first fountain, and Primitive purity'. He challenged the 'pre-conceived prejudice. that all almost hitherto have had about the difficultie of it'. The student need not know Latin but may study Hebrew through the medium of English, for Hebrew 'hath no more dependence upon, nor nearnesse or connexion with either Latine or Greek; then [sic] with either English or Spanish, or any other Tongue or Language Vulgarly spoken in Europe'. Robertson, moreover, was convinced that the female sex was fully capable enough 'of this kinde of learning; of which I had often before in my own thoughts perswaded my self, in consideration of that readinesse of wit, and quicknesse of understanding and apprehension, so naturall to them'. He sought to simplify instructional methods and to 'take quite out of the way, those obstructing Mountains of difficultie', stressing the importance of reducing Hebrew words to their roots, and teaching the language by alphabetical principles rather than by scriptural texts" (ODNB). This is the copy of the fastidious collector and scholar Brent Gration-Maxfield, with his extensive neatly pencilled bibliographic notes to the front free endpaper and rear pastedown, and his pencilled instructions to the binder to rear blank leaf giving instructions for the lavish binding which he commissioned. ESTC R12181 & R209075; Wing R-1611 & R-1618. Two works bound in a single vol., octavo (145 x 90 mm). Late 20th-century red crushed morocco by Lewis & Harris of Bath for Brent Gration-Maxfield (his ex-libris stamped in gilt at head of front turn-in), spine gilt in compartments with central calligraphic flourish surrounded by small tools, covers with gilt-ruled frame, scrolling cornerpieces, centerpiece of fleuron and small tools; floral cornerpieces, turn-ins with elaborate cresting roll, all edges gilt. Title page with early ink ownership inscription of Robert Brooks; blank verso of fourth leaf inscribed in ink "Hannah Colborne / was b[ought]/ Sept 23 : 1721". Expert paper repairs (not affecting text) at fore edge of first, second, and fourth leaf of first part, and to title and terminal two leaves of second part; minor worming at foot (not affecting text) of F1-G7, minor burnholes to H5 and Aa5 of second part. A very good copy, lightly browned due to paper stock but otherwise clean and crisp, in a fine decorative binding.…
