A propos de cet article
A lot of three magazines, dated 1967-1984 featuring the work of three American icons from the tumultuous cultural upheaval of the 1960s, including a first published appearance of a Malcolm X speech, given shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. This lot features two issues of 'Evergreen Review', the literary magazine founded in 1957 by Barney Rosset of The Grove Press. The December, 1967 issue features three poems by LeRoi Jones - 'leroy', Black People, and 'The Black Man Is Making New Gods', as well as an interview with Jones at Spirit House, the black community theatre he helped found. In addition to Jones, this issue contains the Bukowski poem, 'Men's Crapper; and the first appearance of the Malcolm X speech, 'God's Judgement of White America'. Malcolm X gave the speech at a rally in Manhattan on December 1, 1963, just nine days after Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, and condemns America's white liberals, as well as the 'Uncle Tom' black leaders of the day, whom he felt were simply puppets of those white liberals, and ashamed of their black roots. The February, 1969 issue of 'Evergreen Review' features the Bukowski poem - 'Even the Sun Was Afraid'. The December, 1984 issue of High Times features the Bukowski story - 'The Death of the father: Notes of a Dirty Old Man'. All three magazines are in exquisite condition with little wear. #1N-055.
