A propos de cet article

(Dustjacket has been repaired; was missing spine of dustjacket; otherwise book is excellent). Over 300 illustrations, including line drawings, black-and-white photographs, and full-color plates. A seminal, pioneering study of Pennsylvania German ("Pennsylvania Dutch") material culture, craft traditions, and regional decorative arts. Published right after WWII, Lichten's book was among the first comprehensive visual catalogs to document, categorize, and preserve rural Pennsylvania German folk art for scholars and collectors. Some of the objects: wrought-iron hinges, stove plates, trivets, punched tinware, coffee pots, and cookie cutters.Paper & Glass: Fraktur (illuminated birth, baptismal, and house blessings), manuscript lettering, paper cuttings (Scherenschnitte), and early American glass. Comprehensive visual analysis of iconic regional symbols, including the distelfink (goldfinch), tulip, pomegranate, heart, tree of life, and geometric rosette/compass star designs. …
