"His sympathetic stance toward the rights of women persisted throughout his life, but he was never particularly successful at bringing about legislative changes. His dislike of slavery and concern for blacks was also a constant theme but was manifested in different ways throughout his life: from early sympathy for African colonization, to legislative participation in excluding blacks from Indiana, to the radical support of emancipation and suffrage of his later years.
