First edition, with the scarce and fragile dust jacket. Resident in Shanghai from 1904 to 1949, the author (1894-1961) was proficient in several Chinese instruments and toured the US in the 1930s, giving lectures on Chinese music and performing his own compositions. This study was much admired by the cultural critic Lin Yutang and the famous opera performer Mei Lanfang. Octavo. With half-tone tipped in as frontispiece, diagrams, musical scores, and Chinese characters in text. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards panelled in blind. With dust jacket. Remains of bookseller's ticket on front pastedown. Contents with light toning; jacket price-clipped, a few chips and couple of small folds, small splits at foot of rear fold and head of spine, repaired on verso: a fine copy in very good jacket.
