A propos de cet article

Printed by Lewis Printing Company, Richmond, Virginia. Illustrated softcover, with historical photographs, portraits, maps, documentary reproductions, and an extensive index. An engaging, privately published history of Washington Parish in Westmoreland County, Virginia, situated in the Northern Neck between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. Organized chronologically from the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries, this concise local history documents colonial settlement, Indigenous inhabitants, churches, plantations, transportation, Revolutionary-era politics, and the prominent Washington, Lee, Monroe, and Madison families. Subjects include Captain John Smith, George Washington's birthplace at Wakefield, Stratford Hall, the 1766 Leedstown Resolutions, early horse racing, and the changing communities of the Northern Neck. Illustrated throughout with historical images and reproductions of primary documents, including an especially useful map locating historic properties, churches, landings, and roads. Copyright 1991, with the author's foreword dated December 1991. The front cover reproduces Walter Jefferson's 1976 watercolor depicting the steamer Lancaster at Saunders' Wharf, looking toward Leedstown and Ingleside. The rear cover reproduces historic trade beads discovered at Leedstown in 1925, from a Smithsonian Institution publication. The title-page illustration also credits Jefferson for the commemorative seal of the 200th anniversary of the Leedstown Resolutions. A previous owner's name-and-address stamp appears at the upper right of the title page. Original illustrated softcover with light edge and corner wear, minor rubbing, and slight handling marks visible along the white cover margins. The illustrated front remains attractive. Interior pages are clean and well preserved, with clear illustrations and no markings found aside from the former owner's stamp. No dust jacket, as issued. Collector's Note: Particularly interesting is the publisher's explicit account of its early desktop-publishing production: Adobe Goudy type composed on an Apple Macintosh using QuarkXPress, illustrations scanned with an AppleOne scanner, and film negatives output using a Linotronic 330. This unusual technical colophon documents the transition from traditional printing to digital prepress in early-1990s regional publishing. The book also preserves Walter Jefferson's local historical artwork and incorporates material credited to the Smithsonian Institution and Virginia historical collections. …
