A propos de cet article

First Cornhill edition, second illustrated edition overall, and the first illustrated dust jacket we can trace. The text follows Shelley's revised 1831 edition but omits both its introduction and the original 1818 preface. This edition is rare in commerce, with no other copies traced in auction records. Although little is known about Boston-based Katherine G. Healey (c. 1876-1954), she appears to have been active in the early 1920s, having previously designed the dust jacket for A Daughter of the Ozarks (1921), also published by the Cornhill Company. Both jacket designs share a dynamic composition and gothic imagery, contrasting with the quaint children's illustrations she produced during the same period. The first illustrated edition of Frankenstein appeared in 1831, featuring two illustrations by Theodore von Holst. Subsequent theatrical depictions of Victor and his monster increasingly drew on actors and scenes from stage adaptations. Carl Lagerquist, however, returned to Shelley's original narrative, illustrating two scenes of the monster's creation and one featuring Victor and Elizabeth. Glut 50; Lyles B36a. Octavo. Halftone frontispiece, 2 plates, by Carl Lagerquist. Original blue cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, spine with gilt tooling and publisher's device, top edge gilt. With dust jacket by Katherine G. Healey, priced at $2.00 on spine. A couple bumps to extremities, light rubbing, a little bubbling to rear cover, pale damp stain to frontispiece and title fore-margin, spots of foxing to edges; jacket unclipped, spine with price reduction in pencil, chips and closed tears to rubbed edges, light soiling and foxing, front flap with damp stain: a very good copy in like jacket.…
