First edition of the first dedicated English translation of Du Fu's poetry published outside China, preceding by a few months Florence Ayscough's Tu Fu: the Autobiography of a Chinese Poet. Du Fu (712-770), alongside his Tang contemporaries Li Bai, Wang Wei, and Bai Juyi, is regarded as one of the greatest lyric poets. His work, deeply shaped by personal experience and events such as the 755 An Lushan Rebellion, reflects both private emotion and wider cultural upheaval. "In Chinese culture, his works have been virtually canonized" (Chou, p. 1). Such are the intricacies of his verse that Arthur Waley famously declined to translate it. One of 1,000 copies printed on American white wove paper, from a total edition of 1,050, the remaining 50 were issued on Japan vellum. Eva Shan Chou, Reconsidering Tu Fu: Literary Greatness and Cultural Context, 2006. Octavo (183 x 137 mm). With 19 plates. Title page printed in red and black. Contemporary dark green quarter morocco, spine lettered in gilt, covers decorated in gilt rule and blind fleuron, pictorial sides of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock pastiche, light green morocco corners, patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green silk bookmarker, binder's stamp of George Scheirer to rear turn-in. Ownership inscription, dated 1959, of Nellian Scheirer on the contents page. Spine toned, covers a little bowed, marginal dampstains to a couple of pages. A very good copy.
