First impression of the first UK edition. (First published in the US by Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., New York, in 1907). Illustrated with seventeen black and white photographs by Katharine Coman including tissue-guarded frontispiece showing: 'Garden of Wordsworth's Home at Cockermouth'. One folding black and white map between pages 2-3 of England by J. Hart, Nutley N. J. as called for.***Good in terracotta cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decoration to spine and gilt titles and gilt illustrated 'Art Nouveau' design to front board. Top edge of text-block gilt. Fore-edge and bottom edge of text-block untrimmed (rough-cut, as called for). Lower front of spine splitting. Upper part of rear spine splitting. Edges of boards rubbed. Head and tail of spine rubbed and nicked. Edges of boards slightly faded. Small neat gift inscription to top of front free endpaper. Light offsetting to front and rear free endpapers. Pages clean. Last index page edge uncut (can be carefully cut open). 386 pages including index to rear. 220mm x 148mm. ***Chapters: The Border; The Lake Country; Three Rush-Bearings; A Group of Industrial Counties; The Heart of England - Warwickshire; The Cotswolds; Counties of the Severn Valley; Somerset and Devonshire; Cornwall. ***Katharine Lee Bates (1859 - 1929) was Bates was an author who wrote poetry, travel books, and children's books, and was also an American songwriter, remembered as the author of the words to the anthem "America the Beautiful". Bates lived in Wellesley with her partner Katharine Coman, who illustrated with photographs From Gretna Green To Lands End" and was a history and political economy teacher and founder of the Wellesley College Economics department, where the author was a Professor of English Literature. The pair lived together for twenty-five years until Coman's death in 1915. Katharine Coman (1857 - 1915) was also an author and an American social activist, historian and economist with a special interest in the development of the American West.
