Item description from seller

Miss Whitmore Jones, Games of Patience For One or More Players: FIRST SERIES. Published in London by L. Upcott Gill in 1888. A rare book, and the desirable first volume in the series by the incomparable Miss Mary Whitmore Jones, who was widely considered the Patience guru of her age – indeed, a second series would follow in 1890, a third in 1892, a fourth in 1898, and the fifth in 1900. Together her works contain around 250 different games. An exciting find, and I'm delighted to report that the book presents well, with no serious defects to observe, and remains in nicely preserved condition. Rich in antique charm, the book is bound in its original decorative green cloth boards, with the original tissue-guarded frontis in place (foxed to its edges) and is profusely illustrated throughout. The binding benefits from being stitched and remains square and sound. There are no prior ownership names or inscriptions and, internally, the pages are surprisingly clean throughout and in excellent order. There is some mild foxing to the front endpaper and around the tissue-guard edges covering the frontis and this has transferred to the outer edges of the title-page. Minor issues, and to be expected with its age, but noted for sake of accuracy. Overall this delightful rarity displays only mild indications of antiquarian wear commensurate with age - for example, the closed page edges of the text-block are toned and lightly marked with the top edge displaying an old mark towards the spine (as shown). Front and rear pastedowns show natural age tanning. An interesting relevant few pages, taken from "The Strand Magazine" have been loosely inserted inside the book. Dimensions: approx. 13cm x 19cm.
