A propos de cet article

New condition gray boards, blue spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a new condition color photographic dust jacket. Includes Preliminary Page Quote from I Promessi Sposi, chapter VIII; Prologue and Epilogue. Translated from the Italian by William Weaver. "Hailed as a masterpiece throughout the Western World: The Garden of the Finzi-Cotinis. Bassini's story of love and blighted hopes is set in Fascist Italy on the eve of World War II. It details the relationship of two young Jews in the provincial town of Ferrara. The narrator has long been fascinated by the aristocratic and socially exclusive Finzi-Continis. When the Fascist regime establishes more and more restrictive racial laws, he and young Micol Finzi-Contini are drawn together. Though he can see the effects of Fascist policy on Ferrara's Jews - he cannot use the Municipal Library to prepare his thesis; his brother cannot attend the University; his friend Bruno drops his engagement to a Christian girl - his infatuation with Micol overrides all other concerns. It is only through the filter of distance and time that he comes to realize all that he has truly lost." - from the rear outer cover. "Ferrara, Italy in the early 1930s was an idyllic town. Bassani's young narrator, however, chafes at its provincial limitations and restrictions. School is as predictable as ever; only the gossip of Professor Meldolesi about his private pupils, Alberto and Mcol, is of any interest. That they do not attend the local school is no surprise to the townspeople; the aristocratic Finzi-Contini family has always isolated itself. As a middle-class Jew, the narrator has contact with them only a few times a year: when they come to school to sit for their final exams, and at the synagogue for Passover and Yom Kippur. For the most part, the Finzi-Continis remain detached from the life of the town. They pursue "a vocation of solitude" within their walled estate. It is not until Mussolini issues the antisemitic edicts of 1938 that the narrator is first invited into the private haven of the Finzi-Contini garden. Having been expelled from the tennis club, he is invited by Alberto to play at their private courts. Thus begins his complex and tortuous relationship with the beautiful and enigmatic Micol. Over the course of the summer they speak of many things as they walk the park- like garden: the trees, their childhood, their relatives. The deceptively protective walls preclude any discussion of serous issues. As the racial laws expand, the insular world of the Finzi-Continis further contracts. They withdraw to await the inevitable end." - from the inner front jacket flap. "For those who want to comprehend, with a delicate and refined subtlety, exactly how it felt to be a Jew in Europe in 1938." - Christian Science Monitor. ".it is an honest book, and tells with a kind of probing tenderness a true story of sensitive and vulnerable youth in a somber decade." - Saturday Review of Literature. "a literary event to note, especially for readers who also remember the haunting De Sica film." - Publishers Weekly.…

Description de la boutique

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
