Item description from seller

REVEALING: BRILLIANT" POIGNANT: VIRTUOSIC: NEW First Trade Paperback Edition (Orig. 2011) Third Printing: NEW handsomely-illustrated full-color gloss-laminated cover w/ sharp NEW edges & corners, NEW uncreased perfect binding, PRISTINE interior handsomely-printed on VG unblemished archival paper * 5.42" x 8.24" x 0.84", 0.42 kg, xxvi+310 (336) pp * ABOUT THE BOOK: Of the five poems contained in this book, two are acknowledged masterpieces. The plot of "Sir Gawain & the Green Knight", an Arthurian romance, brilliantly interweaves elements of suspense & high comedy. "Pearl", a dream vision, presents its poignant story of the education of a misguided Christian soul in metrically intricate & verbally ornate stanzas that add up to an overarching numerical design. Together with these two, "Patience", "Cleanness", & "Saint Erkenwald" make up the complete works of their anonymous author. All exhibit the dramatizing powers & metrical virtuosity of a master-poet. But none became part of the established literary canon until the 2nd half of the 19th century, when the single manuscript copies in which they survive were edited & printed. Taken together, these works offer us a wide-ranging portrait of life in the late Middle Ages from the point of view of an independent-minded, learned, & cosmopolitan Englishman, a man as conversant w/ the conduct of life in great households as with Christian tradition & doctrine. He knew, among other things, how to sail a medieval passenger ship from its mooring to open sea, how to dress the carcass of a deer or a boar at the end of a royal hunt, & how a knight might flatter a noble & beautiful lady in the most intimate of situations while politely evading her seductive overtures. * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: MARIE BOROFF (1923–2019) was Sterling Professor of English at Yale University. Her verse translation of "Sir Gawain & the Green Knight" was first published in 1967; it appeared together with her translations of "Patience", "Cleanness", "Pearl" & "St. Erkenwald" in "The Gawain Poet: Complete Works" (2011). She was the author of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: A Stylistic and Metrical Study" & of "Traditions and Renewals: Chaucer, the Gawain-Poet, and Beyond" (1962, 2003). * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & custom-packages this fine book for FREE domestic shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL or USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a nominal additional fee & via efficient USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL to all international shipments at our posted rates.
