983 p. 26 cm. Sound and square binding in black, cloth-covered boards. Worn through at the corners. Spine ends weakened and the head of spine is frayed. Tiny tear to cloth of upper edge of spine. A little scuffing to both boards. Text block eges are tanned with a bit of soil. Internally, there is a previous owner's name and address on the front free endpaper and both sets of endpapers have some light soil. The pages are a little rippled, mostly notable to the touch. It has a small bit of foxing to the fore-edges of some of the preliminary pages. There is some staining in the gutters of a few pages and some pencil marks to the text and margins of several others in the Trenton Group section. Otherwise, the pages are clean and unmarked overall, with some light toning to the edges. The first comprehensive study of the geology of Canada (as at 1863). Produced by the "father of Canadian geology" William Logan, the first director of the Geological Survey of Canada. The work received national and international acclaim for its content, style, and precision and is still considered to be one of the most important Canadian scientific works of nineteenth century Canada. Illustrated with 498 wood cuts in the text. An atlas of maps and sections was published to accompany the text, but is not included with this listing. May require extra postage due to weight of book.
