A propos de cet article

Attractive Victorian illustrated gift-book edition of From Gold to Grey: Being Poems and Pictures of Life and Nature by Mrs. Mary D. Brine, published by Cassell & Company circa 1886. Richly illustrated throughout with full-page wood engravings and decorative borders by a large and distinguished group of late 19th-century British artists, including E. Blair Leighton, Frank Dadd, Alice Havers, W. Hatherell, E. F. Brewtnall (RWS), H. Giacomelli, William Small, H. M. Paget, and others active in The Graphic and Illustrated London News circles. The volume exemplifies the high-quality composite illustration style of Cassell’s deluxe gift books, combining pastoral scenes, genre imagery, and floral ornamentation printed on heavy stock with elaborate page design. Includes a neat contemporary ownership inscription, “Henrietta M. Harmon,” adding a touch of period provenance. Poems explore themes of rural life, sentiment, and nature, accompanied by finely executed engravings such as “The Haymaking Girl,” “Spring Time,” and “The Parting Hour.” Bound in original gilt pictorial cloth with beveled boards and all edges gilt, retaining strong decorative appeal. A handsome and display-worthy example of Victorian book art.…

Description de la boutique

Welcome to The Hidden History of Books, where every volume has a story waiting to be rediscovered. As a retired librarian with a background in scholarly research and book provenance, I specialize in rare books and first editions that span all genres — from the overlooked and obscure to the culturally iconic. My inventory is carefully sourced from estate sales and private collections, with a focus on books that carry the quiet weight of time, ownership, and intellectual legacy. I believe a book’s value lies not just in its content or rarity, but in the lives it has touched along the way — authors, owners, annotators, and collectors. That belief informs everything I do. You can count on: Conservative grading — no surprises, no exaggerations. I highlight flaws openly and describe condition with care. Detailed listings with a focus on historical and bibliographic context when available. Fast, safe shipping using USPS Media Mail and secure packaging to protect your purchase. Whether you’re a collector, a scholar, or a fellow lover of forgotten shelves, I invite you to browse the catalog and uncover the hidden histories that live between the covers.…
