An impressive collection of twelve very scarce 1939 publications from the Government Evacuation Scheme, an impressive programme relocating British children to the rural countryside to shield them from the bombing of London.Under the name "Operation Pied Piper", the effort began on 1 September 1939 and officially relocated 1.5 million people. The publications included in this volume demonstrate the logistics and planning that contributed to this impressive endeavour.Present in this volume are:Government Evacuation Scheme, Memo. Ev. 1., a 'memorandum for the guidance of local authorities in the conduct of the survey of housing accommodation'.A 27th April 1939 pamphlet titled 'Board of Education, Air Raid Precautions in Schools'.A 1st May 1939 message to local councils from the Government Evacuation Scheme.A 19th May Board of Education pamphlet titled 'Education of Evacuated School Children in the Time of Emergency'.27th June, 1939, London County Council notice regarding 'The Government Evacuation Scheme Special Parties', and a 30th June continuation of this.The Ministry of Health Memo. Ev. 5 'Government Evacuation Scheme' pamphlet.A 21st August London County Council notice regarding 'Evacuation and National Registration'.A handbook from the scheme regarding 'The Feeding of Handicapped, Nursery School and Day Nursery Children'.A 29th August pamphlet 'Schooling in an Emergency'.A 29th August notice regarding 'Evacuation of Blind Persons' from the London County Council area.The final eighty leaves consist of typed notices and instructions regarding the evacuation process, including discussion of payment of teachers and helpers, 'resumption of school life in receiving areas', communal meals, clothing and shoes, and 'welfare committees and difficult cases'.With the stamp of the Department of Health and Social Services Library to a front blank. In a half morocco binding, with marbled paper covered boards. Light rubbing to back strip head and tail, with small ink library number to back strip tail, and evidence of paper label residue to rear board. Library stamp to a front blank.
