A propos de cet article

Content description. The Greatest Benefit to Mankind: A Medical History of Humanity is Roy Porter's sweeping and richly illustrated examination of the history of medicine, tracing humanity's efforts to understand disease, relieve suffering, and preserve health from the ancient world to the modern era. Porter, a distinguished historian of medicine, explores the medical traditions of ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, and India; the influence of religion and philosophy on medical practice; the development of anatomy and surgery; and the emergence of scientific medicine. He follows the discoveries and controversies that transformed medical knowledge, including advances in bacteriology, vaccination, anesthesia, public health, and the treatment of infectious diseases. Beyond chronicling scientific breakthroughs, Porter examines medicine within its broader social, cultural, political, and ethical contexts. He considers the changing relationship between physicians and patients, the development of hospitals and medical institutions, and the profound effects of medical progress on human society. Enhanced by numerous historical illustrations, this authoritative and engaging volume is an important reference for students and scholars of medical history, health professionals, historians of science, and general readers interested in the evolution of medicine and its influence on civilization. Condition Description. Very Good hardcover in a Very Good dust jacket. First American Edition, second printing (1998).
