First edition, elegantly bound by Rivière. All ten stories had previously appeared in serials, though six had been heavily bowdlerized for their appearance in the 1890 Christmas number of the Graphic, three of them "to a remarkable extent" (Purdy). In the 1880s Hardy began to publish his short magazine fiction in book form, and this was the second collection to be released. Purdy, pp. 61-66; Sadleir 1106; Wolff 2976. Octavo (187 x 122 mm). Contemporary blue crushed half morocco by Rivière, spines with raised bands lettered in gilt, compartments bordered with gilt fillets and rolls, blue cloth sides, French Curl pattern marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, fore and bottom edges uncut. Spine mildly sunned, cloth marked, marks to bottom margin of pp. 20-25, else contents fresh. A very good copy. N° de réf. du vendeur 178035
