Admiral Ansel had access to German wartime records not generally available to scholars, and he interviewed many of the officers and men who participated in the battles he discusses. Hitler's capture of Crete in 1941 at first seemed to spell doom for Allied efforts in the Mediterranean. But instead of consolidating his gains there, Hitler soon after turned to the invasion of Russia. His failure to concentrate on the possibilities of a Mediterranean strategy helped turn the tide of World War II. This highly readable account of the battle of the Mediterranean is presented against a background of the ever~shifting plans and struggles for power of Hitler himself and the German High Command. A new focus is provided to this particularly fascinating segment of the war. Rear Admiral Walter Ansel, U.S.N. (Ret.), served as Operations Officer of landing attack forces in the invasions of Northwest Africa and Sicily in World War II. During operations against Italy and Southern France, he commanded the U.S.S. Philadelphia. His earlier book, Hitler Confronts England, was called by The Times Literary Supplement "one of the most impressive of all the books that have so far dealt with the Second World War, and a distinguished piece of work without limitation of subject.".
