A propos de cet article

The complete 2nd and final issue. Original stapled tan wraps 18x27cm with a strong black woodblock print to the front, titles in red, with a red print to the back. Printed on 28 February and published on 5 March, Showa 9 (1934). 24pp Japanese text with b/w illustrations throughout + (3) monochrome print leaves + 1 original colour print tipped in + contents table and other information to the inner wraps. Many of the works in this issue are credited to Unichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997, signed "UN") a major figure in Japan's Sosaku-Hanga (Creative Print) movement. The tipped colour print is by him, titled "Kudara Kyuto Fuyo Heiseito". The condition is overall very good with rust residue around the staples. Hiratsuka's colour print has a small foxing spot above the clouds that shows through to the reverse, with a larger spot directly below on the mounting leaf. This highly influential art journal ran for only 2 issues, the first in March 1932, and this final one in March 1934. It appeared during the avant-garde Sosaku-Hanga (Creative Print) movement to elevate woodblock prints from commercial craft to fine art. It set itself apart from the popular Shin-Hanga ("New Print") movement which used traditional printing houses, focusing instead on the "self-designed, self-carved, and self-printed". People behind it included Unichi Hiratsuka, Koshiro Onchi, and the Hanga Kenkyukai (Printmaking Research Society). Hiratsuka used this journal to teach techniques to a broader public. Given the challenges related to its high production values, the publishers streamlined its production and relaunched it as "Hanga" in January 1936, which ran for 13 issues until 1939. The articles include: On the Twelve River Woodblocks of the Nagoya Osu Kannon Sutra (Meiju); The Tsubame Woodblock (Kanichi Hayashi); How to Make Patterns Part 2 (Muto); Contemporary Prints of Kai Province (Unichi Hiratsuka); Introduction to Mr Hans Hunter (Koshiro Onchi); Children's Drawing Exhibition; Review Record; Rainbow Page.…
