Item description from seller

This is the 1833 volume of Heath's Picturesque Annual, the second year of Charles Heath's celebrated English gift-book series pairing a travel narrative with a suite of fine steel engravings, following the series' 1832 launch. Leitch Ritchie, the Scottish novelist and journalist, provides the text, an engaging account of travels along the Rhine and through Belgium and Holland touching on the traditions of Baden, the banks of the Main, and the legends of the Rhine robbers, while the twenty-six plates were engraved after drawings by the marine and landscape painter Clarkson Stanfield, whose views of Cologne, the riverside towns, and the countryside give the book its lasting appeal to collectors of nineteenth-century topographical art. The binding is the publisher's original full crimson morocco, blind-ruled in panel borders with gilt corner ornaments and a gilt laurel wreath medallion centered on both boards, and an elaborately gilt-tooled spine with raised bands, the title lettered in gilt, and the date 1833 gilt-stamped at the foot. The front pastedown carries the ticket of the binder, F. Westley of Friar Street, near Doctors' Commons, London, a nice piece of period binding provenance. A red silk page-marker ribbon remains attached and functional. Condition is honestly Good rather than higher: the morocco across the spine panels and board edges shows real surface rubbing, with patches where the dyed leather has worn through to the lighter layer beneath, consistent with a well-loved copy rather than one that sat shelved. That said, the book is structurally sound throughout, with no cracking to the joints and the text block firmly bound. The text and all twenty-six Stanfield engravings are clean, and the tissue guards protecting the plates remain intact and present, a detail that is frequently missing on copies of this age and one that speaks well of how the book was kept. Light pencil bookseller notations appear on the front free endpaper from prior trade handling, but there is no foxing, no loose plates, and no writing within the text itself. A handsome example of the English illustrated annual at its best, well suited to collectors of Clarkson Stanfield, Rhine and Low Countries travel literature, or the fine-binding gift-book tradition of the 1830s.
