1824. Presumed first edition in four volumes. v (no half-title), 480pp.; iv, 480pp.; [iii], 484pp.; [iii], 480pp. John MacCulloch (1773-1835) was a Scottish geologist. He was the first geologist to be employed by the government in Britain and is best known for his pioneering texts on geology and for producing the first geological maps of Scotland. In the present work he combines descriptions of the Scottish Highlands and Western Isles with insightful accounts of their scenery, antiquities, and political history. He also writes of the ancient manners, origins, language, agriculture, economy, music, and present condition of the people, providing a comprehensive portrait of early 19th-century Scottish life. The four volumes are uniformly bound in contemporary half leather over marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label and simple gold designs and volumes numbers on the spines. The cases of the books are in need of repair and the front board to volume 2 is missing. The boards have noticeable shelf wear with some soiling and staining and small pieces of leather are missing from the corner tips and spine ends. The boards of volumes 1 and 3 are detached and the remaining boards are only loosely held in place. The text of the contents is tight and the pages are clean apart from a few scattered small marks and stains. The endpapers are lightly foxed and there is also foxing to the title-page of volume 3. The title-page of volume 4 has a water stain down the spine edge. Overall, this is probably best regarded as being a reading and reference set, and is suitable for a professional repair and re-casing.
