A propos de cet article

First separate edition of this extensively illustrated study of the Buddhist and Jain cave monuments of western India, drawing on researches Bird began in 1828. Its plates document architecture, sculpture, paintings, inscriptions, and associated coins, while the text places the sites within the history and diffusion of Buddhism and Jainism. Bird (1797-1864), a physician in the East India Company's service who became physician-general to the Bombay Army, visited Ajanta in 1828. A shorter version of his researches appeared in the Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1844. The present publication expands the text and supplies 53 lithographs, including 35 plates of architecture and sculpture and 18 of inscriptions and coins. Bird examines the cave complexes at Ajanta, Ellora, Kanheri, Karli, and Nasik, tracing connections with Buddhist remains in the Punjab and Afghanistan. The plates were financed with contributions from 59 subscribers. The book followed James Fergusson's Illustrations of the Rock-Cut Temples of India (1845) by two years. Robert Gill had been commissioned in 1844 to copy Ajanta's deteriorating murals. The work is also an early expression of concern for the preservation of India's antiquities. In 1828 Bird had attempted, despite protests, to remove four painted figures from Ajanta's walls; they disintegrated in the process. By 1847, he was invoking "the duty imposed on us, as a nation, to preserve these relics of ancient art". Richard S. Cohen identifies this reversal in Bird's attitude, observing that his conception of the caves' universal significance remained intertwined with colonial assumptions about the religious and moral condition of India's population. Mildred Archer & Ronald Lightbown, India Observed, 1982; Richard S. Cohen, Beyond Enlightenment: Buddhism, Religion, Modernity, 2017. Small folio (370 x 255 mm). 53 lithographed plates, including unnumbered folding supplementary plate (plate XLIII not issued, as in other copies). Contemporary grey-green bead-grain half cloth, marbled sides. Ownership inscriptions of "W. H. Clarke, Rainhill, 1876" to front pastedown, head of title, list of plates, and Chapter 1. Spine rumpled, binding a little rubbed, lower fore-corners of plates damp-stained, scattered foxing, a few plates toned, folding plate soiled and ragged at fore edge, closed tears extending into plates XXV and XXXII. A good, sound copy.…
