A propos de cet article

Wonderful illustrations which capture the Pittsburgh area as it was in the mid-19th century, when so much of it was rural and semi-rural with picturesque rolling hills dotted with sometimes sprawling farm houses with a vaguely Italianate styling giving character to their shingled construction. Adding to the charm of these drawings are the depiction of people, often on a horse-drawn vehicle. Also three maps on two pages, with hand-coloring, and drawings of many of the personages of note during the first century of the area's settlement and development by non-native Americans. Folio, 36.5 by 31.5 cm. 242 pp. With 84 plates, numbered I to LXXXIV). Note plates are not part of pagination, but most, but not all, plate leaves are printed on both sides, with each side a numbered plate. Double paged illustrations, though, are counted as single plates. These two-paged illustrations are a highlight for us, but we wouldn't slight the single paged and half-paged drawings (plates with two illustrations). While the drawings of standalone houses certainly comprise the majority of architectural renderings in this book, there are no shortage of more urban structures that had been built in Pittsburgh itself. The book is also not light on text. In addition to its narrative history, it has a particular focus on the Civil War, with biographies of military leaders from the area who did their bit during the war, and an exhaustive list of all the individuals from the area who served in the Union Army, here listed by regiment, and a "Roll of Honor" listing those who died serving in the Army. Some looseness to the boards, but holding and probably acceptable to many as is. The spine is heavily rubbed and scuffed. Its extremities have lifted a bit, and the upper spine tip is slighted chewed in its appearance. Corners bumped moderately. First few leaves have foxing, heaviest on first tissue guard. Otherwise leaves are generally clean. Quarter Morocco. Blindstamped (and gilt stamped) cloth boards.…
