A propos de cet article

Washington: Harvey W. Wiley, 1929. 8vo, 413 p., original black cloth stamped in gilt. First edition of this rare self published account of the history behind the Pure Food and Drug Act which had passed into law in 1906. As the first head of the Bureau of Chemistry (later rebranded as the FDA), Wiley assembled a team of scientists known as the "Poison Squad" who exposed the ways in which industry adulterated food products. An entire chapter of the book is devoted to addressing the question: "What is Whisky?", which seeks to expose the fraud associated with its widespread use a medicine at the time. Spine gilt dulled and illegible, pencil annotations to several pages; minor rubbing to corners, with some light spotting to rear board, but a sound clean copy of a scarce book. Numerous holdings in OCLC, but scarce on the market.
