A propos de cet article

An appealing copy of the first edition of a classic study of demonology, comparative religion, mythology, folklore and the history of occult belief. Original publisher's black cloth, decoratively stamped in red and black to upper board, gilt lettering to spine. Illustrated throughout with numerous full-page and in-text illustrations, reproducing artworks, engravings, religious imagery and historical depictions relating to demonology, mythology and the development of the concept of evil. This is the first edition which is 1900, with a copyright for text of 1899. A substantial and highly readable late Victorian study tracing the evolution of the Devil and the idea of evil through the religions and cultures of the ancient and modern world. Carus examines Egyptian, Persian, Jewish, Buddhist and Christian traditions, together with medieval demonology, witchcraft, folklore, superstition and the philosophical problem of evil. Richly illustrated and regarded as one of the classic comparative studies of the subject. Condition: Very Good. Original cloth binding remains bright and attractive with strong gilt to spine. Light wear to spine ends and minor rubbing commensurate with age. Text block clean and fresh with occasional spotting. All illustrations present. Binding sound and secure, no missing or detached pages. Uncut pages. Mary Evans Picture Library ownership bookplate to front pastedown (repository of Fortean and arcane illustrations and not a public lending library). A particularly well-preserved example of this increasingly sought-after work. See photos, all of which are of the copy for sale, we don’t use stock photos.
