A propos de cet article

Louisville: Privately Printed by Rob Morris, 1859. [16] 1-592 pp. First edition. Original blind-stamped cloth cover, gilt-lettered spine. Folding diploma tipped in to front free fly. Moderate rubbing and scuffing to cover and a few very small points of loss (see images). Overall a very attractive copy of this scarce work. Sabin 50871. Written while Rob Morris (1818–1888) was serving as Grand Master of Kentucky (1858–59), this was the first substantial printed history of Kentucky Masonry. Morris covers the Craft's arrival in America (from about 1733), the five early Kentucky lodges working under Virginia warrants (Lexington, Paris, Georgetown, Frankfort, Shelbyville), the 1800 organization of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky (the first Grand Lodge west of the Appalachians), lodge-by-lodge notes, statistical tables, a contemporary survey of other U.S. and foreign jurisdictions, an early American Masonic bibliography, and a catalogue of Kentucky Masons. Contemporary reviews praised the archival work and bibliography. Morris is better known today as the founder of the Order of the Eastern Star, a prolific Masonic poet, and later "Poet Laureate of Freemasonry." He wrote the book as a working Grand Master and lecturer; later Kentucky historians (including H. B. Grant and modern writers such as John Bizzack) still cite it, even while noting Morris's tendency to minimize the Morgan Affair's local impact and to editorialize. It was advertised at $2.50 post-paid. Sales were poor. The Grand Lodge of Kentucky later bought the unsold remainder and distributed copies to subordinate lodges. That institutional purchase, plus the usual attrition of 19th-century lodge libraries, is why original copies are uncommon on the open market. Microfiche and digital reprints (Lost Cause Press, Google Books, Internet Archive, etc.) are readily available; original 1859 cloth copies are not.…
