A two volume set of the First Edition with two similar frontispieces, A Specimen of the measure of the Bedas plate and the folding map as called for. Bound in contemporary full calf with twin title labels, with five raised gilt edged bands, and gilt filets to both boards. Vol I lxxvi, 364pp; Vol II [vi], 298pp, History of the Mogul Empire, 96pp. British Library Citation number T91573, this states that a third volume was published in 1772. Vol.3, The history of Hindostan, from the death of Akbar, to the complete settlement of the empire under Aurungzebe. . By Alexander Dow, . , London, 1772, is an original work by Dow. The second edition of this work was also published in 2 volumes in 1770. Provenance: with the bookplate for John Pollexfen Bastard to the front paste down. John Pollexfen Bastard (18 September 1756 4 April 1816) was a British Tory politician, landowner and colonel of the East Devon Militia who was born and lived at Kitley House, Yealmpton, Devon. He left no children from two marriages. Approximately 11 inches tall (28cm). Condition Report Externally Spine good condition elegant pair, gilt titles and volume numbers to twin labels, five raised gilt edged bands, leather is marked and rubbed, top and bottom edge worn with some loss, structurally solid and robust. Joints good condition rubbed and worn. Corners good condition bumped and worn. Boards good condition attractive polished calf leather boards, double gilt filet. Page edges top edge darkened; all edges faded red. See above and photos. Internally Hinges good condition sound. Paste downs good condition tanned, bookplate; worming to the front paste down of Vol I. End papers foxed and tanned, worming to the base of the front end paper of Vol I. Title page good condition tanned with some foxing, wormed to the base of Vol I title. Pages good condition tanned with some foxing throughout, worming through to page lv of Vol I see photos.
