A propos de cet article

First edition of this description of the Taiping Rebellion, co-written by two officials attached to the French diplomatic corps in Canton in the 1840s. Callery (1810-1862), a missionary-sinologist, served as an interpreter, while Yvan (1803-1873) was the embassy physician. It was first published in French (1853), and an American edition followed the same year. Cordier 645 (second British edition); Löwendahl 1138 (first American edition). Octavo. Portrait frontispiece with tissue guard, folding map with red marks added by hand; 16 pp. advertisements dated September 1853 at rear. Original brown morocco-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt, boards decoratively blocked in blind, yellow coated endpapers, top edge untrimmed, binder's ticket of Westleys & Co. on rear pastedown. Recent bookseller pencilling on front endpaper. Light bumping and rubbing to cloth, small stub tear, most gatherings unopened: a near-fine copy.…
