A very scarce, beautifully illustrated work from English historian John Allen Giles. A very scarce work from John Allen Giles (1808-1884). Giles was an English historian and scholar of Anglo-Saxo language. He is known for having revised translations of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Bede"s Ecclesiastical History of the English People. This charming work on the history of Bampton contains 8 plates, including frontispiece. In a half calf leather binding, with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Some light rubbing to the extremities and some very light marks to the boards. Previous owners bookplate to front pastedown. Small sticker to bottom right of rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound.
