William Hogarth was one of the greatest moral and social arbiters of the 18th century. His series of moral painting, reproduced into strikingly detailed engravings , were almost instantaneously of social significance. The engravings, of which there are six main series, are now highly collected. The series , of which many of the individual pictures have become iconic, are as follows : "A Harlot's Progress", "The Rake's Progress", "The Four Stages of Cruelty", "Beer Street : Gin Lane", Industry and Idleness", and "Marriage - à - la - Mode". This book, published by the Rodale Press in its "Miniature Books Series" was edited by Michael Alexander.

The books in the series were anything but miniature, but that is what Rodale called the series. This is a nice specimen of the book, which, aside from bumped corners (upon which it is evident that a bit of mending was neatly effected) the book is in clean and attractive condition. Quarter-bound with printed paper-covered boards and cloth covered spine, it is a handsome little book.

PHYSICAL DETAILS : Slim hardcover book; contain 38 miniature reproductions plus one small portrait of the artist, printed on semi-calendered paper; contains the editor's Introduction, notes, captional text on each picture, brief biography of Hogarth; 59 pages (pagination includes preliminary pages); 5 1/2" x 8 7/16"; quarter-bound, with paper-covered boards and cloth covered spine. the boards are printed with a densely repeating floral pattern in light blue, in the midst of which is a portrait of Hogarth. The cloth over the spine is dark brown , with gilt lettering and the monogram of the series. The rear cover replicates the front, without the portrait.

CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections noted :

EXTERIOR -- The spine extremities are slightly compressed, and have a touch of abrasion; gilt on spine is fairly bright'; board surfaces are clean with but mild surface rub; board corner tips are bumped, with attendant small splitting of paper, and, to the top, creasing; - evidence of modest mending, neatly effected, to top corner tips, front and rear (hence the condition grade). Text-block edges are clean.
BINDING -- Still solid
INTERIOR -- Clean and free of marking throughout. The top fore-edge corner tips are bumped throughout (following the exterior impact).
