Richly illustrated with black and white and color photographs. Original black cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and front board, and including white dust-jacket with color photograph. Dust-jacket in very good condition with minor scuffing. Binding also in very good condition with minor shelf wear and a light splay to the fore-edge of the boards. No marking inside. Gold woven bookmark is stitched into the binding. This history of the New York State Nurses Association begins at the turn of the 20th century, and finishes with the reforms of the 1980s and 1990s, on the eve of the 21st century. Subjects include the formation of the NYSNA, the development of the profession of nursing during the Progressive Era, nursing in New York State during the Depression and war years, the intense professionalization of the 1950s and 60s, organizing for independence, standards and working conditions, and more.
