The WPA (Works Progress Administration) Federal Writers' Project produced the Houston: A Complete History guidebook as part of its American Guide Series. Published during the Great Depression era, this guide provides a comprehensive historical and cultural snapshot of the city. Including exploration of Houston's diverse cultural fabric, reflecting on its multicultural influences from Native American tribes to European settlers and later waves of immigration; Economic Development; Architecture and Landmarks; and Tourist Information. [Ref: REF: Hunter, 44; Schoyer, #592] Background Information: The American Guide Series books were compiled by the FWP, but printed by individual states, and contained detailed histories of each of the then 48 states of the Union with descriptions of every major city and town. In total, the project employed over 6,000 writers. The format was uniform, comprising essays on the state's history and culture, descriptions of its major cities, automobile tours of important attractions, and a portfolio of photographs.
