Printed in Great Britain. Date from the title page. (Second Impression: Limited to 500 copies.) Introduction, The Life, &c., Fragments, Footnotes, Additional Notes; xi, [iii], 252 pages. The original light yellow cloth is excellent, with corners square and copper lettering on the barely bumped spine about as bright as if just issued. [NB---the author's name is 'Iamblicus' on the spine and also on the dust jacket.] The interior is creamy-bright, crisp, and completely clean. The engraving of the head of Iamblichus faces the title page. This is a lovely fresh copy. The original dust jacket shows some age-toning, mostly on the sunned spine, has several chips, not affecting the text, and is clipped at the bottom of front flap. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] From the Introduction: "With respect to the Pythagoric Sentences in this volume, [. . .] I have endeavored, and I trust not in vain, to give the genuine sense of Sextus, unmingled with the barbarous and polluted interpolations of Ruffinus." § [T]he Pythagoric life which is here delineated [. . .] exhibits piety unadulterated with folly, moral virtue uncontaminated with vice, science unmingled with sophistry, dignity of mind and manners unaccompanied with pride, a sublime magnificence in theory, without any degradation in practice, and a vigor of intellect, which elevates its possessor to the vision of divinity, and thus deifies while it exalts." The books listed here are, indeed, from my father's library, representing the depth and varied interests of a modern scholar's mind. Dr. Henry LeRoy Finch, professor emeritus of philosophy and a published author, trained in the classics (graduating top in his class at Yale), and went on to develop an appreciation for modern thinkers. It took over half-a-century to amass this collection of primarily-scholarly books with a broad range of subjects from Philosophy and Religion (with an emphasis on the interrelationships and intricacies of Eastern and Western Thinking) to scientific influences played out over the entire history of humankind, touching necessarily on Art, Anthropology, Archaeology, Literature, History of various Cultures, Psychology, Physics, and Spiritual Thought, including Theosophy and Mysticism. Many are esoteric philosophical works, out-of-print and unavailable elsewhere. A great number cover the interconnections of so many subjects as to defy classification. His was a working library: each volume was read and familiar, its whereabouts on a shelf always known, even when "double-parked." Though many of the books are esoteric, others will appeal to the general reader, often making an abstruse subject more approachable. (There are a hundred books on Einstein alone!) In addition, there are numerous paperbacks--classics, scholarly, first-published editions, several versions of the same book (in different translations), handy for packing along in a back pocket. Each of the volumes from the collection has a bookplate tipped in at the front and may have pencil marginalia--sparse or profuse. I have tried to reflect this in all the listings, but feel free to call and discuss further details of a book's condition. As it will take a long time to write up all the descriptions, some of you may wish to call and ask about a particular book you have been seeking. I have no store front; for sales by email (or telephone), please send check or money-order payable in US dollars. Credit card orders are welcome through Abebooks. Please contact me if you need more information (or scans) for any of the books. I try to describe each one carefully but if you feel it has been misrepresented, any book is returnable within a reasonable amount of time. Please notify me first. My policy is to charge only the actual shipping rates: Media mail is $3.20 anywhere within the United States for the first volume (it takes 7 to 10 days, sometimes a little longer); for Priority mail (two or three days usually), cost is $5.50 for one volume.
