Commander Edward Ellsberg. Hell on Ice: The Saga of the 'Jeannette.' New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1938. First Edition. Octavo, 421 pages, with striking blue pictorial endpapers depicting the Jeannette's Arctic route and crew. A vivid narrative of the tragic 1879-1881 polar expedition led by George W. De Long, whose ship, the USS Jeannette, became trapped in Arctic ice north of Siberia. Ellsberg - a celebrated naval engineer and author of On the Bottom - reconstructs the expedition's endurance, heroism, and tragedy with a seaman's precision and emotional power. Condition: Very Good. Blue cloth with gilt ship motif and spine titles; light rubbing and faint spots to boards, spine mildly dulled. Binding tight and square; map endpapers clean though lightly toned at gutter. Interior crisp with only faint age toning. A well-preserved example of this classic maritime chronicle. Commander Edward Ellsberg (1891-1983) was an American naval officer, engineer, and author celebrated for his pioneering salvage operations and bestselling maritime books. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and MIT, he oversaw notable recoveries including the submarine S-51 and inspired generations of naval engineers through works such as On the Bottom and Thirty Fathoms Deep. Hell on Ice stands among his finest achievements, blending historical rigor with gripping storytelling.…
