Originally submitted in June 1997 as Report of Investigations 93-36 by Panamerican Consultants, Inc. of Memphis, Tennessee, the report documents excavations conducted between 1992 and 1997 ahead of the construction of the Jefferson Street Bridge (Kelly Miller Smith Memorial Bridge). The East Nashville Mounds Site (40DV4) represents a fortified Mississippian civic-ceremonial town with multiple earthen platform mounds, a central plaza, and stone-box grave burials dating between 1250 and 1450 CE; the French Lick/Sulphur Dell Site (40DV5) documents prehistoric mineral exploitation through clay salt-pan evaporation. Authored by Richard Walling, Lawrence Alexander, and Dr. Evan Peacock, Professor Emeritus at Mississippi State University and senior researcher at the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, this report provides primary data on Mississippian trade, ceramic typology, skeletal biology, and settlement patterns essential for southeastern prehistory research.…
