A propos de cet article

[MORFORD, Henry]. John Jasper’s Secret. A Sequel to Charles Dickens’ Unfinished Novel “The Mystery of Edwin Drood.” Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson & Brothers, [1871]. FIRST EDITION. Duodecimo (12mo.). [2], 19–408, [8] pp., with one preliminary blank leaf. Title-page verso advertising Charles Dickens’s works; eight pages of publisher’s advertisements at rear. The preface begins on p. 19, a pagination also recorded in other Peterson copies. Publisher’s original brown pebble-grained cloth, boards stamped in blind, spine pictorially decorated and lettered in gilt; green coated endpapers. Issued in a binding uniform with Peterson’s People’s Edition of the works of Charles Dickens. One of the earliest attempts to complete The Mystery of Edwin Drood, left unfinished at Dickens’s death in June 1870. This unauthorized continuation takes up the unresolved mystery surrounding Edwin’s disappearance and his enigmatic uncle, John Jasper, reflecting the contemporary fascination that made Dickens’s final novel a lasting literary puzzle. Originally published serially in Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, April-September 1871, only months after Dickens's passing; then, published anonymously in book form, later attributed to the American novelist and journalist Henry Morford. The Philadelphia edition preceded the first English book edition of 1872. Contents generally clean and unmarked; previous owners' pencil notations on last page of reading dates, dated 1911. Binding is square and firm. Hinges weakened though holding, partial cracks with netting visible. Cloth clean with little to no rubbing; corners bumped and worn; spine's crown and tail with fraying and tears. A Very Good First Edition. References: Wright, American Fiction, 1851–1875, II, 1743; cf. Podeschi, Dickens and Dickensiana, D26, for Peterson’s collected edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover.].…
