New York: G.P. Putnam s Sons, 1907. Two volumes, octavo. xi, 281; 284, [4, ads] pp. First edition, thus. Publisher s dark navy blue cloth, top edge gilt. Some spine dulling and rubbing with moderate binding wear; contents clean. A very good set overall. Frederick Law Olmsted s A Journey in the Back Country marks the culmination of his Southern travel narratives, offering his clearest and most unvarnished indictment of slavery. Originally published in 1860 and reissued here in 1907, this is the first edition in two volumes under the revised title. Based on his 1853 1854 journey, Olmsted no longer tempers his observations; he dismisses any lingering romanticism about the South and exposes the harsh social realities he encountered. Notably, he juxtaposes Southern class stratification with that of the North, offering a comparative analysis that underscores the economic and social degradation wrought by slavery. (Clark) Grounded in first-hand observation, Olmsted s reporting helped shape Northern public opinion on the eve of the Civil War and remains a key document of antebellum social commentary.
