Item description from seller

First impression of the true first edition. ***Near fine in forest green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards clean and unmarked. Corners sharp. Top edge of text-block slightly foxed. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Very light unobtrusive foxing to endpapers and pastedowns. No creases or tears. ***In a near fine price-clipped colour-printed dustwrapper. Green panel on spine of dustwrapper slightly faded. No chips or tears. Dustwrapper bright and clean. ***224mm x 144mm. 224 pages. ***'"Getting to Know the General" is Graham Greene's account of a five-year personal involvement with Omar Torrijos, ruler of Panama from 1968-81. General Torrijos presided over a vital period of his country's history that saw the end of the United States rule in the Canal Zone. His dream of a social-democratic Central America that could offer hope for her peoples without presenting a Communist challenge to the Unites States was to be an inspiration and source of help for those fighting in Nicaragua and El Salvador against brutal dictatorships. Had Torrijos live, it is possible to believe with Graham Greene that he might have presented and carried through a credible solution to many of the political and economic problems of one of the world's most troubled areas.' (Quote taken from the rear flap of the dustwrapper). ***First impression of the true first edition, complete in its original dustwrapper, in nice collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
