A propos de cet article

Chambers, Robert W. The King in Yellow. New York: F. Tennyson Neely, (1895). Small 8vo. Frontis, [2] [7]10-316, [4 pp advert]. First edition, third printing. Original black cloth with silver lettering and red and yellow decorative design. Top edge gilt. Modest rubbing to cover, with slight loss to color. Includes textual change to conclusion of “The Yellow Sign” as expected. An exceptional copy with the Yellow King cover, the most iconic and visually striking of the book’s various bindings. A cornerstone of American supernatural horror and weird fiction, Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow (1895) is widely regarded as one of the most influential collections between Edgar Allan Poe and the modern era of cosmic horror. Drawing on decadent and symbolist traditions, Chambers conjures a chilling atmosphere of cosmic dread, unreliable narration, and lurking otherworldly forces that profoundly shaped later masters such as H.P. Lovecraft (who drew directly on its imagery and themes for the Cthulhu Mythos), as well as countless authors in the weird fiction tradition. A landmark that helped bridge Victorian ghost stories with 20th-century weird and cosmic horror, it remains essential reading for any serious collector of the genre—and gained renewed popular attention as a key inspiration for the first season of the acclaimed HBO series True Detective. …
