Item description from seller

Hardback. First Edition. Ex-library with ex-library markings. Couple of tiny marks to D/J. from removal of old label. On 27 August 1883 the most terrifying volcanic eruption occurred on the island of Krakatoa, five muiles off the western tip of Java. The island was destroyed and almost 40,000 people were killed. The impact was truly global: ships sailing in the Red Sea were covered in ash; barometers went haywire in Washington; the seas were disturbed in Devon; stunning sunsets burned over London; immense rafts of pumice floated to Africa. In his wonderfully engaging and inimitable style, the author brings to life the drama, the people and the science behind this iconic event. He explains how Krakatoa is the key to answerinf our questions about why mountains explode, how life begins and what happens beneath the earth's surface; and hence why the word 'Krakatoa' has become embedded in the consciousness of the modern world. The world shifted, geologically, politically and socially on 27 August 1883. The recent completion of the global telegraph cable meant that, for the first time in history, an event on one side of the world could be communicated to the other within just a few hours. And there would be further, and even more far-reaching effects; the destruction wrought by this volcano would become the catalyst to a dramatic and bloody uprising of the region's Muslim community against their Western colonial masters. The author's book is the first to truly explain the eruption of Krakatoa. Bursting with anecdote, dramatic eyewitness accounts, illustrations of everything from tidal waves to pepper plants and with a wonderful cast of characters, this book is an informed and brillinatly vivid tale of science and high drama. It is the story of man's destruction and his ultimate survival. Illustrated. 432 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.).
