A propos de cet article

First impression of the first UK edition. The book was originally published by Grove Press, New York in 1964. This copy is in unusually nice condition. A controversial work due to its frank portrayals of taboo subjects, such as drug use, street violence, gang rape, homophobia, prostitution, and domestic violence. The book was the subject of an obscenity trial in the United Kingdom and was banned in Italy. ***Near fine in pale grey cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper, and the boards are clean and unmarked. The head and tail of the spine are virtually uncreased. Corner tips sharp. Top edge of page block unusually clean. Fore-edge and bottom edge of page block white and clean with no foxing. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no previous ownership inscriptions. Endpapers white and clean with just very light offsetting. Interior pages also white and clean. No foxing. No creases or tears. ***In a very good stylish dustwrapper, designed by Ed Day. The dustwrapper is complete, and retains the original publisher's printed price of 30s on the front flap. The dustwrapper has some inevitable rubbing and creasing to the extremities, mainly affecting the head and tail of the spine, but no serious creases or tears and no loss (please see scans). The spine of the dustwrapper is very clean, with no browning or fading. ***208mm x 140mm. 234 pages. ***'Hubert "Cubby" Selby Jr. (July 23, 1928 - April 26, 2004) was an American novelist. Two of his books, "Last Exit to Brooklyn" (1964) and "Requiem for a Dream" (1978), were adapted into films, both of which he appeared in. With no formal writing training, Selby used a raw language to depict the bleak and violent world that encompassed his youth, which would go on to set the stage for his early life. His first novel was prosecuted for obscenity in the United Kingdom and banned in Italy, which prompted defenses from many leading authors such as Anthony Burgess. He has influenced multiple generations of writers. For more than 20 years, he taught creative writing at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he lived full-time after 1983. ***Last Exit to Brooklyn is divided into six parts that can, more or less, be read separately. Each part is prefaced with a passage from the Bible: "Another Day, Another Dollar"; "The Queen Is Dead"; "And Baby Makes Three"; "Tralala"; "Strike"; "Landsend" - Described as a "coda" for the book, this section presents the intertwined, yet ordinary day of numerous denizens in a housing project. (Wiki) ***First impression of the first UK edition, complete in its original dustwrapper, in unusually nice condition. A collector's copy, and a key text of the 1960s counter-culture. Most copies of this book have damaged dustwrappers, as they are prone to tearing and chipping and eventual loss. This is the best copy we have handled in 30+ years. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
