First edition. Two volumes bound as one. Octavo. Late nineteenth-century half blue calf over marbled boards, the spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, and with red morocco title label lettered in gilt. Red-speckled page edges. Marbled endpapers. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Letitia Landon. pp. vii, [1], 301, [2] + viii, 315, [1]. A very good copy, the binding firm with a few scuffs to the spine and board edges and with bumping to the corners. The contents with light foxing to the frontispiece and title page are otherwise in very good order, remaining clean throughout. An uncommon early biography of the English poet and novelist Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838), better known by her initials L. E. L., who significantly influenced the development of women's writing during the nineteenth century, with Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti counting amongst her admirers. The first volume of the work comprises a biography of Landon, with the second forming a collection of her writings. N° de réf. du vendeur 1718
