Item description from seller

First edition. 8vo. Inked gift inscription on the second fly leaf and signed as Mr and Mrs. H. W. Graber. Also laid-in is a business card with the name Mrs. H. W. Graber and the inked words "With much love" on the verso. Two-tone quarter leather and cloth, titles stamped in gilt on the front cover and spine, frontispiece, (portrait of H. W. Graber), 442 pp., preface. Parrish, Civil War Texana 39 says: ?The Dallas Times Herald noted in 1916 that ?this book was written as a memento for General Graber?s descendants, and a limited edition only has been provided for the general public. There are now only 120 copies for distribution, and there will be no more printed.? Graber saw action with Terry?s Texas Rangers throughout the Western theater including Shiloh, Corinth, Bardstown, Perryville, Murfreesboro, and with Wheeler, as well as harassing Sherman during the Atlanta campaign.? One of the finest narratives relating to the 8th Texas Cavalry and his reminiscences of early Ellis and Dallas Counties. His experiences during the Civil War were both numerous and varied in nature, as he was wounded in Tennessee and captured, tried to escape, and was imprisoned. Eventually he was paroled and rejoined his command in time to take part in the middle Tennessee Campaign. Eventually, at the end of the war, he returned to Texas after declining parole and requesting to be sent home. One of the rarest and desirable of the Texas Confederate regimentals. Howes G280, "printed in a small edition." Original spine replaced in quarter leather, new front and rear endpapers, a small old water stain to the lower front corners that gradually diminish over the first 50 pages raised bands and titles stamped in gilt on the spine, else a very good, bright, tight square copy of a rare book. A handsome copy housed in a protective book carton.
