A propos de cet article

First edition (per matching dates upon title and copyright pages). 442 pages. H 23cm x L 15.25cm. Poor condition - original dark beige cloth rubbed, strong mottling to spine and along joint of front board, spine ends well frayed with cloth loss and tearing, gilt stamped spine lettering easily legible but no longer particularly bright, beveled board edges with corners worn. Front hinge splitting; past owner's signature in pencil on front free endpaper with an inverted inscription by same owner dated 1887 also in pencil on rear free endpaper; four quires (pages 209-272) tenuously attached to binding by a mere two or three threads; some pencil check marks at margins of first three chapters; a few page corners creased. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak. However, Prentiss failed in his bid for the US Senate in 1840 whereupon he moved to New Orleans and resumed practicing law. Wright Howes US IANA S-414. A poor copy of a scarce biography.…
