A propos de cet article

Rare First Edition, 1966. Oversize softcover, glossy pictorial wraps, 128 pp. Very good, light shelf wear to covers, some minor spotting interior, solid binding. Out of print for more than fifty years (Reprinted in 2023), this volume is a landmark in both psychedelic discourse and documentary photography. Alongside a point-counterpoint text in which psychologist Richard Alpert, later known as Ram Dass and psychiatrist Sidney Cohen debate the risks, therapeutic possibilities, and ethics of LSD, the book features Lawrence Schiller's groundbreaking photo essay, an inside account of the emerging American "acid scene" that grew out of his cover story on LSD for Life magazine. Schiller was among the first national photojournalists to document LSD use from within the subculture, building trust with young users who allowed him to photograph private sessions, parties, and figures such as Timothy Leary and the Merry Pranksters at the Hollywood Acid Tests. The resulting images, later recognized as touchstone documents of 1960s psychedelic culture, capture both euphoria and disorientation, framing LSD as a social and political phenomenon rather than mere spectacle. For contemporary readers, amid renewed interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy, decriminalization, and the visual history of counterculture, this book functions as a primary source on how LSD first entered mainstream awareness, visually and intellectually. A key acquisition for collectors of mid-century documentary photography, psychedelic history, and the early Ram Dass/Leary milieu.…
