The procession assembled at the Lateran patriarchate, the great palace which was the seat of government. Clerical officers, the acolytes and 'guardians', preceded the papal procession on foot, while mounted lay-constables controlled the crowd. Other officers then came on horseback - the deacons, the primicerius or chief officer of the guardians, the regionary notaries, the regionary guardians, the regionary subdeacons. In the 'division of the kingdom' between his three sons, which Charlemagne drew up in 806, he states simply what bound him to the Church of Rome. The obligation to defend the Roman Church and its rightful possessions had been handed to him by his father and grandfather, and he now transmitted it to his sons. This obligation, he had said elsewhere, was defined in the treaty between the Frankish kingdom and the Roman Church - the first treaty being that between Pippin and Stephen, which was renewed and modified on many subsequent occasions by later rulers. In 896 or early in 897 Pope Stephen VI had the nine-months-old corpse of Pope Formosus taken from the grave to be 'judged' by a synod of bishops. The dead man was condemned. At the end of 1044 the Tusculan dynasty was shaken by a rising in Rome. The Romans united to depose the pope. But in January of the following year the former government got the support of Trastevere in the city, and of the descendants of Count Octavian of Sabina without, and returned after some street fighting. The quarrel involved the two comital families of Sabina, the descendants of Count Octavian and of Stefania.St Bernard at Clairvaux and St Norbert at Prémontré were setting patterns for the religious communities which were to renew and revitalise much of clerical life; both Norbert and other leaders such as Walter of Ravenna were feeling their way towards reforms which would affect the cathedral clergy as well as the religious of the monasteries.1 September 1159 Hadrian IV died. At the moment of his death imperial pressure on the papacy was stronger than it had been since the time of the Emperor Henry V,They therefore tried to impose Octavian of Monticelli, a cardinal of the so-called Ottaviani family of the Campagna, with strong imperialist connections. Innocent III, of the family of the counts of Segni, was elected pope on 8 January 1198. In zeal, energy and political ability this young pope was the equal of any other Roman pontiff of the Middle Ages.; FINE/FINE. Book. N° de réf. du vendeur 009188
