The procession assembled at the Lateran patriarchate, the great palace which was the seat of government. Clerical officers, the acolytes and 'guardians', preceded the papal procession on foot, while mounted lay-constables controlled the crowd. The quarrel involved the two comital families of Sabina, the descendants of Count Octavian and of Stefania.St Bernard at Clairvaux and St Norbert at Pr�montr� were setting patterns for the religious communities which were to renew and revitalise much of clerical life; both Norbert and other leaders such as Walter of Ravenna were feeling their way towards reforms which would affect the cathedral clergy as well as the religious of the monasteries.1 September 1159 Hadrian IV died. At the moment of his death imperial pressure on the papacy was stronger than it had been since the time of the Emperor Henry V,They therefore tried to impose Octavian of Monticelli, a cardinal of the so-called Ottaviani family of the Campagna, with strong imperialist connections. Innocent III, of the family of the counts of Segni, was elected pope on 8 January 1198.
