Peirce's essay appears on pp. 533-559. First Edition (Ketner P00477).The Metaphysical Importance of "Continuity" Explained"the most valuable things I have done" Having dealt decisively with the topic of Chance (which he calls tychism), in his first two essays in the Monist, Peirce devoted his next two essays to his theories about continuity (which he calls synechism) - these being the two essential building blocks of his systematic metaphysics. On 24 May, Peirce sent Carus his manuscript for "The Law of Mind," - having told Carus just a few weeks earlier that it, along with "Man's Glassy Essence," amounted to "the most valuable things I have done."This article explores Peirce's synechism - "continuity" - which he argues is "an idea of prime importance in philosophy". As such, it serves as a fundamental element of Peirce's overall metaphysical scheme and is central to his systematic rejection of metaphysical (most especially Cartesian) dualism. "The Law of Mind" offers a nuanced and radically dynamic view of mental processes claiming that ideas are also entities that evolve through the interplay of spontaneity, interconnectedness and habit. Just as there is continuity between natural events and causes, so too there is continuity between all of the psychical phenomena in the universe. Ideas, Peirce says, consist of three basic elements: (1) a quality as a feeling, (2) an energy to affect other ideas and (3) a tendency to bring other ideas along with it. Ideas are, in fact, "living feelings" that spread out, overlap and connect with each other having a natural tendency to grow and, in the process, affect other ideas, leading to the creation of more general concepts and beliefs. This law thus posits the evolutionary nature of the mind, insisting that the mind's logical processes evolve and grow over time, ever striving toward greater coherence, consistency and correspondence with external realities. This interconnectedness, this growth and this process of evolving creation, he says, are absolutely essential for any plausible explanation of how knowledge and understanding come to be in the world.Peirce claims that habit is an essential element in this process because "in whatever manner the mind has reacted under a given sensation, in that manner it is the more likely to react again." Once again, this is not deterministic. Instead, it merely establishes a probabilistic tendency, allowing for spontaneity and novelty in thought and action which also has a strong tendency towards habit formation. This law and the habits that accompany it are intimately connected with the external world. The mind's reasoning processes are not purely subjective or divorced from reality; ideas adapt to the external world in a way that is consistent with the world's structure and laws. Thought thus has a teleological aspect - the goal being the discovery of truth, or the formation of beliefs that correspond to reality. Mental processes are oriented towards a logical and practical outcome, as they strive to correspond to reality through signs, habits, and reasoning. "The Law of Mind", then, boldly explores how reasoning and thought develop through habitual processes, guided by a law of mind that evolves over time, interacts with the world, and leads to the formation of logical and coherent beliefs. This comprehensive approach not only integrates Peirce's views on semiotics, logic, and the nature of human cognition, it also show how personality exists as a coordination of ideas, and how communication can occur between individual minds.SEE our Catalog 25: Charles Sanders Peirce for a collection of 12 books, journals and offprints by Peirce.
