An uncommon first English edition of Julius von Sachs's notable lectures on plant physiology; in the publisher's original attractive quarter crushed morocco binding. Julius von Sachs was a renowned and authoritative German botanist who greatly advanced the knowledge of plant physiology and the cause of experimental biology during the second half of the nineteenth century. With the forty six lectures in this work organised into the following sections: Part I: Organography Part II: The External Conditions of Vegetable-life, and the Properties of Plants Part III: Nutrition Part IV: Growth Part V: Irritability Part VI: Reproduction. This work was translated by the renowned British botanist, mycologist, and plant pathologist Harry Marshall Ward, who personally worked with Sachs on his experiments in the field of experimental botany. Copiously illustrated through with four hundred and fifty five woodcut illustrations. In the publisher's quarter crushed morocco binding, with gilt title to spine. Externally generally smart with slight bumping to extremities and rubbing to head and tail of spine. Split to leather to head of front joint, with head of spine lifting. Small sections of rubbing to front joint resulting in slight loss to leather. Institutional bookplate tipped to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright and clean throughout. Offsetting to half title page, with ink inscription by prior owner. Very Good Indeed. N° de réf. du vendeur 648M18

Paperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book begins with the observation of microscopic organisms before expanding to examine the life processes and functions of plants from microscopic observations. The author reveals how these organisms exhibit properties that are fundamental to the life of all plant cells. The text covers basic botany, delving into the fundamental properties of plant protoplasm and how it performs essential functions such as absorption, metabolism, excretion, and reproduction. The author then describes observations that established the sensitivity of organisms to external stimuli and their ability to modify their behavior. The author goes on to explain how specialized parts of plant cells perform specific functions, leading to differentiation of form and even division of labor within multicellular plants, with the formation of specialized organs such as stems, leaves, and roots. This book provides a comprehensive overview of plant physiology, describing the structure, properties, and functions of plant cells, establishing a foundation for further study in the field of botany. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. N° de réf. du vendeur 9781332316465_0
