OSGOOD M.D., DANIEL (1776-1852). A Letter on the Yellow Fever of the West Indies. New York: Elam Bliss, 1820. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, 72 pp, bound in deep red leather with black spine label, marbled boards. Front matter (pp. iii - vii) contains a printed letter to Cyrus Perkins, M.D., Late Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Dartmouth College; a portion of a letter from Perkins to Osgood on this subject is annexed to the end of this publication (pp. 61-72). Sabin’s Biblioteca Americana 57770, not listed in Garrison & Morton. A near fine copy with some browning to title page, quite scarce. Daniel Osgood and Cyrus Perkins were classmates, and both graduated from Dartmouth with Bachelors of Medicine in 1802. Osgood wrote his dissertation on Consumption, and Perkins wrote his on Fevers. (Source: Medical Repository of Original Essays and Intelligence, April 1, 1803). Osgood became a practitioner of medicine in Havana, Cuba. Osgood wrote in part: "Together to all the places in which this fever becomes endemic is the sea, or some other body of water. In the West Indian islands, with the exception of the very small ones, persons who reside in the inland parts, when affected with fever, have it not of this kind. But instances of its being of this kind are seen in them, when they have become disordered shortly after they have left the interior and removed to the sea or a harbor. On the contrary, even strangers from cold climates, who on the first arrival at a tropical one go into the country and remain there, escape the disease.".…
