Item description from seller

This is "The Letters of George Santayana", Edited , with Commentary and introduction by Daniel Cory. It is the 1955 First Edition hardcover, published by Charles Scribner's Sons. It is an astonishing collection of letters, which include, among many, correspondence to Van Wyck Brooks, 'A. E' (George Russell), Iris Orego, Charles Eliot Norton, British Poet Laureate Robert Bridges, Ezra Pound, J. Middleton Murray, William James, Charles W. Eliot, Abbott Lawrence Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Logan Pearsall Smith, and many more. Excerpted from the jacket write-up : " The letters of George Santayana, starting in the summer of 1886, and spanning a period of sixty-six years, open the doors to an intellectual adventure that few could hope to rival, There is something here for nearly everybody : for the poet, for the metaphysician, for the literary critic, for the historian of culture, And . there is more than enough gossip. Found within this book are trenchant comments on intellectual giants of the past :on Plato and Shakespeare, on Goethe, Balzac, and Dickens. Nor are outstanding contemporary figures disregarded : Whitehead and Russell, Proust and Faulkner - all appear under the searchlight of Santayana's criticism. " It is a veritable feast for those who savor the flavor of Santayana's thought.
